From a school project to a full-fledged open data platform — the journey of mapping Nepal's geography, culture, healthcare, and education through technology.
Know-Nepal started as a simple curiosity: could I build a structured database of Nepal's geography and public data? What began as a small Spring Boot experiment quickly evolved into a full-scale open knowledge platform with a dedicated GitHub organization and multiple microservices.
The Mission To make reliable information about Nepal accessible to everyone through technology.
The Vision Connecting Nepal with the world while empowering its people through technology.
Architecture Know-Nepal is built as a Spring Boot microservice ecosystem. The first module, know-nepal-geography, handles Nepal's geographic hierarchy: 7 provinces, 77 districts, and local government structures. It uses Spring Data JPA with PostgreSQL for persistence, with RESTful APIs exposing structured endpoints for each administrative level.
Built so far - Geographic Data Engine: Full data models for Provinces, Districts, and Local Government structures with relational mappings. - Smart Search: Dynamic query system that can filter and retrieve geographic entities by multiple criteria. - Infrastructure Ledgers: Searchable directories for educational institutions (Schools and Colleges) with location-based filtering. - Smart Healthcare: Hospital directory with a disease-to-facility matching engine that recommends proper hospitals based on medical profiles and location.
In development - Destinations & Tourist Attractions: Curated guides to Nepal's natural beauty, trekking routes, and cultural landmarks. - Hotels & Homestays: Verified accommodation listings across all regions. - Culture & Festivals: An interactive calendar and deep-dives into Nepal's rich cultural heritage. - Traditional Foods: A digital cookbook and food guide covering regional cuisines. - Heritage Sites: Comprehensive database of UNESCO and local heritage sites.
The tech stack includes Java 17, Spring Boot, PostgreSQL, Hibernate, and Maven. The project is open source under the KnowNepalOrg organization, welcoming contributions from developers who want to help make Nepal's data accessible to the world.
This is just the beginning. The goal is to become the go-to open knowledge platform for everything Nepal.
